Wal-Mart is an american public multinational corporation with several discount chains. Wal-Mart was ranked 18th on Forbes’ Global list of 2000 largest public corporations. Sam Walton founded the discount giant in 1962 and since then the store has grown to about 8,500 stores in fifteen countries. This list is also under 55 differnt store names. The U.S. chain accounts for over $250 billion in annual sales, placing it at 63.8% of the global brands’ sales since 2010. It consists of three different types of WalMarts in the U.S. which include: supercenters, neighborhood markets and discount stores.
Its retail department stores sell mostly non-grocery products. In recent years the focus has primarily been to offer more supercenters which include non-grocery and grocery products. Walmart also has a popular online division, walmart.com, which is popular for household items and other accessories on clearance, sell or out of stock in regular stores. The average size of a Walnart department store is somewhere between 51,000 square feet and 224,000 square feet. In addition to groceries and general merchandise, many stores also carry garden centers, a pharmacy, a commercial bank branch, cell phone stores, an optical center, one-hour photo lab, fast food cafes and a tire and lube express shop.
