American Apparel is a US clothing manufacturer, wholesaler and retailer. The store also performs its own design, advertising and marketing. The brand is best known for its dancewear style, popularizing solid color leotards, leggings and tank tops. American Apparel also sells vintage clothing, nail polish, bedding and accessories for kids, women, men, babies and pets. American Apparel started out as a print t-shirt company and was the idea of Canadian born, Dov Charney. In 1989 the Tufts University student decided to name his wholesale company American Apparel in honor of his fascination with his new home. With his partner, Sam Lim, who had his own sewing company, the two started American Apparel in Los Angeles, California. The company soon moved to the retail market and was ranked 308th in Inc.'s 2005 list of 500 fastest growing US companies with a 440% three year growth. American Apparel became a publicly traded company a year later and Charney became CEO and President of his company. American Apparel continues to manufacture its own clothing within a factory in downtown Los Angeles. The company also operates its own dye house and knitting facility. It serves as a proud American model for business as it has not outsourced any labor to foreign countries and pays its warehouse workers an impressive salary. It claims to have the highest earning apparel workers in the world.
