About Philadelphia

Philadelphia is the city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is also the county seat of Philadelphia County. Philadelphia was founded on October 27, 1692 by William Penn. The city grew rapidly, and around the 1750’s Philadelphia was the largest city and busiest port in the original 13 American colonies.

There is a lot of history, and great places to see here. There’s Independence Hall, the setting of the singing of the Declaration of Independence. The Liberty Bell is also the city’s most famous attraction. Other attractions include homes for Edgar Allan Poe, Betsy Ross, and Thaddeus Kosciuszko. Philadelphia is also home to major science museums such as the Franklin Institute, which contains the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial, the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Mutter Museum, and the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. History museums in the area include the National Constitution Center, the Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia History, the National Museum of American Jewish History, and the African American Museum in Philadelphia, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons in the state of Philadelphia, The Historical Society of Pennsylvania and Eastern State of Penitentiary. Philadelphia is also home to the United States’ first zoo and hospital, as well as to Fairmount Park, which is one of America’s oldest and largest urban parks.

Aside from the great attractions, Philadelphia is home to some very great American foods. The city is known for its hoagies, scrapple, soft pretzels, water ice, Tastykake, and of course, the cheesesteak.

Philadelphia is one of twelve United States cities to have all four major sports: the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL, the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL, the Philadelphia Phillies in the MLB, and the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA.

Philadelphia’s two major daily newspapers are The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News. The area is home to several radio and television networks as well. There is a lot to be said about American media history in this city.
