Mountain View, CA is a city in the San Francisco Bay Area; its name is suited for the city because of its views of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Mountain View has a Mediterranean climate; it is warm and dry in the summer and mild and wet in the winter. Temperatures in July are usually somewhere between 40 and 58 degrees, while temperatures of 57 to 79 degrees are the usual for July. Mountain View's latitude is 37.386N and longitude 122.08W. The city's elevation is 105 feet. Mountain View is in the Pacific Standard time zone. In 2003, the population was slightly over 69,000.Spanish explorers and missionaries came in California in the mid-1700s. The Ohlone Indians had already populated the bay area. A large Native American settlement named Posolmi was located along the San Francisco Bay. By 1977, missionaries had set up Mission Santa Clara and European settlements in Santa Clara Valley. Stage coach service began in 1850 near Grant Road and El Camino Real; this was the beginning of commerce and the initiation of a village.

The name, Mountain View, was established for the city by Jacob Shumway, a store keeper and first postmaster. The creation of San Francisco and San Jose Rail Road was completed in 1888 and a train depot was built. Mountain View began as a stage stop on the route between San Francisco and San Jose. In the 1940s through the 1960s, much of Mountain View was used for growing crops and orchards. After World War II the city grew tremendously and aerospace and electronics businesses prospered. Many people come to Mountain View each year to enjoy events offered in the downtown area, including festivals, the farmers' market, free concerts and celebrations that are unique. The civic center, sidewalk cafes, shops, restaurants and a theater are all located downtown.
