El Centro is surrounded by farmland. The city is also dominated by the government. There are two nearby prisons as well as the U.S. Border Patrol. Due to the recession, however, there hasn’t been much work.
The majority of the city is Hispanic. There is, however, a wide variety of interests in the community. When winter time comes, residents race on sand dunes using their four wheel drive buggies.
According to the 2000 United States Census, there were 37,835 people, 11,439 households and 8,910 families living in the city. The population density was 3,950.2 people per square mile. The median household income for the city was $33,161. The median family income for the city was $36,910. The per capita income for the city was $13,874.
